Design notes from the map-maker API
The SLO Traveller Map (Edition II) is a handcrafted map, meaning it is an artistic representation of New Zealand. Its sense-of-place maps and associated artwork seeks to visually bring together the feelings of places. I really tried to emphasise the abundance of water in NZ - the rivers, harbours, lakes, snow-covered mountains and surrounding oceans. Life in NZ is very much water influenced, either falling from the sky, flowing to the ocean, or lapping at our endless coastline...
The typography used throughout is hand-crafted also, BB Waitangi and BB Mangamuka. Both these I have developed over time specifically for map-making and as a way to connect the maps and artwork to physical places in NZ. It's another layer of depth and connection we are trying to create, that may not be necessary, but can be felt, so therefore is necessary for a truly authentic Special, Local, Organic travelling experience.
I sincerely hope you enjoy using and admiring the maps and artwork as much as I have in creating it. Lastly, it's supposed to be helpful, beautiful and fun, so please treat it as such - scribble on it, fold and refold it, spill good wine and delicious coffee on it, drip fresh strawberry juice and spit watermelon seeds on it, stuff it in your backpack and let it become uniquely yours and a wonderful symbol of your travels throughout NZ. Then when you bang it on your wall at home you can be transported back to all those wonderful experiences you had throughout NZ : ). That is why we do what we do here.
Enjoy,
Aaron (API)
